Castro Marim is surrounded by the Reserva Natural do Sapal, a protected natural reserve. Many species of water birds inhabit the region. Its marshes and saltpans are also feeding and breeding grounds for a great number of migratory birds. Out of breeding season it is not unusual to see hundreds of flamingos feeding in the pans.
