Along the Algarvian coast, all forms of sea fishing are possible. Boats are available for big game, wreck fishing or for just spending a nice day on the sea, bottom fishing. From the shore, you can fish the estuaries and harbors for grey mullet or maybe try your luck at a surf beach.Article: Reading the beach Many people are devoted to rock fishing. After watching the fishermen on the cliffs of Cape St. Vincent you will have second thoughts but it really does not have to be that dangerous. It is surely not for the fainthearted but there are places that are easier to get to. It is certainly a great experience. The whole coast of the Costa Vicentina and in particular Aljezur is a fishing paradise for the sport anglers, eager to catch big fish. Here you can catch the great snappers, white breams, croakers, gilthead breams, conger eels, sea bass, sea breams and many other fish that are part of countless histories, told at nightfall, among friends, in the company of a glass of wine. Bait is normally available in the morning at the local fish market. Article: Carps |
Freshwater fishing is not very popular. However, for those dedicated to carp fishing, the reservoirs in the Algarve are very rewarding. There are many carps and they are not fussy as to what you present them as bait. For ground bait, take along half a bucket of mashed boiled potatoes mixed with whatever is at hand in the kitchen, old bread, cereals, beans, rice, anything really. The water in the reservoirs is deep, so mix it with some clay or sand you find on the shore. Take fresh bread along for bait and a sandwich for yourself. You will catch carp, guaranteed! Go to the same spot a couple of days in a row, throw in your ground bait, and you might end up catching twenty or more a day. Do use a hairline as you do with boilies. If you do not, you will also catch terrapins and those guys are hard to deal with once you hooked them. On the reservoir north of Lagos (Baragem de Bravoura), you can rent tackle in a small bar. Another great sports fish is the American black bass, very common in the
reservoirs. They go for live bait and a variety of artificial lures like
rapallas, ploppers or flies. Direcção Regional de Agricultura do Algarve |
