The area of Monchique is only known in the history with the presence of the Romans in Caldas de Monchique. Attracted by the warm water (32º C) and its healing properties, they built a big spa there.

Very sought-after is honey from Monchique as well as medronho, a high-percentage spirit distilled from the fruits of the strawberry-tree.
