The castle has Arab origins and it was inhabited until the 14th century.
The thick walls of mud are characteristic for Arab constructions. It was conquered from the Arabs by D. Paio Peres Correia in the year of 1248 and it is one of the castles that appear on the flag of Portugal. In the interior stand the ruins of the small chapel of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
