The castle was built by the Almoravid Arabs in the 11th century. Being the largest, most important and best conserved castle in the Algarve, it still dominates the skyline of Silves and is a popular place to visit and relax. The magnificence of the Islamic empire in the Algarve and the splendor of the art of the Muslims reached it’s peak in Silves.
